A Message from our General Manager, Mike Wagner
I measure the value of a vacation by the number of books I read (please don't tell my wife this). I am fresh off a short summer break and was able to finish two great books, while also making it halfway through a third--by all accounts a successful vacation!

The first book was an unauthorized biography of Jony Ives, which really gave a sneak peek inside Apple's industrial design studio. The second book was The Second Machine Age. Not exactly light reading, but for those intrigued with digital disruption, emerging technologies, and brilliant new materials, it is an amazing book. The last book is The Zero Marginal Cost Society, which I would characterize as a mesh between Friedman's The World is Flat and Peter Diamandes' book Abundance.

With the frenetic pace of the business world, it's imperative that we occasionally take time to re-charge our bodies and our minds, whether it's through reading, exercising, or just plain relaxing. I hope that you have been able to or have plans to take some time out for yourself and your family this summer.

There is little debate that the Great Recession was the real catalyst for rapid change, as every individual and business were forced to question what exactly needed to change. The impact to our industry was that the business world was suddenly (and almost completely) focused on breeding new innovation. The pendulum swung toward wide open space plans and the creation of environments that forced constant collaboration. Next, we saw the focus evolve toward corporate agility, and only in the last couple of years have we seen the space planning fundamentals shift toward human-centered design. Over a five- or six-year period, nearly every manufacturer and large design firm developed their own language to describe their planning strategies and furniture applications. Despite the fact that everyone was trying to address the same problems, the proliferation of new and inconsistent vocabulary created mass confusion amongst even the largest and most sophisticated end users. As a result, most customers are trying to wade through this sea of inconsistency and, as such, are seeking clarity.

I think the robust attendance at this year's NeoCon show is conclusive proof that the majority of organizations are still seeking a simplicity that will help guide their real estate strategies. Our Chicago showroom alone experienced an increase in attendance of 60%, year-over-year. And perhaps more revealing, we experienced a 100% increase of pre-arranged appointments during those three days.

Anticipating these discussions with the showroom attendees, we spent a significant amount of time preparing our sales force with the fundamentals of human-centered design. We created tools that de-cluttered the complication of inconsistent vocabulary from across the industry. We focused on crystalizing the basic elements for decision making, as companies seek tailored solutions that enable the highest level of efficiency. We provided solutions that allow you to do "your work, your way". It was critical that our reps understood the various terminologies used across the industry, so they were prepared to speak any language that the customer had already been taught. With 12 new products and three major product line enhancements, as well as new marketing tools and intensive training, our company has never been better prepared to solve even the most complex project requirements. The momentum and the buzz within the showroom was electric, and the management team and our salesforce has never been more optimistic about the future of Kimball Office.

With that being said, what I am most excited by is the chance to move on to "what's next". I have approximately 20 pages of notes from my recent vacation, and I am re-energized by the potential of breakthrough solutions that I want to explore with our leadership. I love stimulating discussions and asking questions that create healthy debate. The real magic happens when we quickly align and work together toward the anticipated challenges of our customers. The real reward is simply being a part of a team that knows how to execute on new ideas that truly make a difference in this world.

Seating Fabric Updates and Deletions
We're taking a new approach to our Seating fabric swatch cards. We have combined the top selling Grade 1 Seating fabrics onto one card, as well as the top selling Grade 2 seating fabrics on a second card. This allows you to present two cards with multiple patterns and colors to choose from instead of pulling out nine individual cards. Combining multiple patterns on one card has allowed us to reduce the number of binders required for our materials offering which will save space on the design library shelves. These cards are available on the Literature Fulfillment site.

In order to facilitate the new card strategy, we are announcing the deletion of some patterns and specific colorways due to sales volume. The following fabrics are announced for deletion effective June 30, 2014. We will continue to support these fabrics through the end of the year while supplies last. Once inventory is depleted, minimum order quantities and extended lead times may apply. Please contact Customer Service for availability.

Patterns
Botan - all colors; Tikki - all colors; Fiji - all colors; and Ezra - all colors.

A Message from Kimball Office General Manager Mike Wagner
NeoCon is fast approaching and our teams are working feverishly to button up last minute details for this year's showroom. We anticipate attendance of this year's show to be near record levels, as the industry is heating up. Our customers are anticipating a very aggressive product launch, as well as a significant transformation in our brand message. I think our marketing team has put forth a plan that won't disappoint.

People-centric design and a rapidly changing workplace is central to our showroom theme this year. We have chosen San Francisco-based Studio O+A to design our Chicago showroom. O+A has been gaining the world's attention and has been featured in Fast Company, WIRED, the New York Times, and nearly every other publication focused on the interiors industry. They have quickly gained the reputation for being "thought-leaders" in workplace concepts, particularly for high-growth, creative, and high tech firms such as Evernote, Square, Facebook, Yelp, and many others.

The entire world is being fueled by advancements in technology, and it's impacting nearly every aspect of life, including great design and workplace concepts. The creative, inspirational, and entrepreneurial spirit found in the corporate culture of O+A's client list affirms their place amongst the hottest design studios in the world. The Kimball Office showroom design in Chicago will reflect O+A's most advanced thinking in workplace concepts, including trends inspired by the "maker" community.

The lower level of our space will resemble the social hub of today's trendiest boutique hotels, while the second floor will showcase the various typologies of workplace applications, which O+A infuses into all of their design projects. All of this will be accomplished with the newest Kimball Office products and our pallet of finishes.

For any designer interested in "what's inspiring Silicon Valley today", the Kimball Office showroom will be the perfect venue. And, for those who will not be in Chicago this year, we will be sharing all of the details on our website immediately following the show in early June.

As the speed of change is raising the stakes in nearly every industry, we must all be in constant exploration for new ways to work. Our goal is to provide you with the resources and inspiration to design your future before others can determine your fate.

Hum receives Australian International Design Award
Formway Furniture's Design Studio has been honored with a prestigious Australian International Design Award. The award, presented at a gala event in Melbourne, went to Hum. Minds at Work, released by Kimball Office and Formway.

The work system was designed in response to an overwhelming desire in the business community to have collaborative workspaces that would increase performance in the work place. Hum is the sound of productivity and a team working well together.

Formway CEO Alan Buckner is delighted with the award and its contribution toward Formway's growing global reputation. "Formway Furniture is proud to have achieved this significant recognition from our peers in the Australian design industry. We have a long and important history in Australia, and this award enhances our reputation for being a design-led business, with meaningful insight and understanding of workplace environments."

Hum stemmed from four years of research and development which included voice of the customer research, prototyping, and input from external experts. The project set out to deliver a product that would compete in the international furniture market. Hum is licensed for manufacture and distributed in the United States through Kimball Office and has been bought by a range of high profile clients in the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

The Australian International Design award is the latest in a remarkable run of recognition that Formway Design has received for Hum. Workplace Strategies Summit is a Success!
Now more than ever, companies need to house employees without increasing real estate space or costs. Today, the current square footage for an employee is 380', and the trend is to reduce that space to under 200'. Companies are looking for creative solutions and have begun implementing Alternative Workplace Strategies (AWS).

Kimball Office recently held the Workplace Strategies Summit at the Los Angeles showroom to create an open forum to discuss details and real life experiences of AWS. Peers and experts exchanged views of their current workplace environments and the movement toward AWS. A panel of experts in the field of AWS fielded questions and aided with discussions.

Attendees commented that they now realize the importance of a variety of work place options. Participants found creative ways to increase the effectiveness of their company's work place environment by using AWS while improving work-life balance.

Kimball Office Partners with ecoScorecard

Like us, many of our customers are concerned about the environment and are looking for opportunities to create greener buildings. However, gathering all the documentation necessary to complete LEED applications can be tedious, cumbersome, and very time-consuming. Now, Kimball Office and ecoScorecard are making it easier.

We have made the decision to partner with ecoScorecard so that Architects, Designers, Dealers, and Facility Managers can easily identify and compare key environmental attributes of specific products. ecoScorecard is a web based tool that provides environmental product information and sustainability documentation for LEED and other third-party rating systems. ecoScorecard also includes information on other building components that contribute to a sustainable office space.

"Green building practices are becoming more common, and by partnering with ecoScorecard, we are ensuring that designers, dealers, and clients can easily access and calculate our products' green attributes any day of the week and at any time," explained Allen Parker, Vice President, Marketing and Sales, for Kimball Office.

By compiling sustainable information from a single source, hours, weeks, and sometimes months can be reduced in the documentation process for new construction or remodel projects. This time savings can contribute to reduced project costs for building owners, architects, designers, product specifiers, and dealer salespersons.

Since 2006, ANEW has helped divert over 1,900 tons of furniture from landfills. If furniture is not suited for reuse, ANEW ensures the items are recycled appropriately.

Kimball Office Broadens Healthcare Seating Options

In response to healthcare industry requests for seating products that offer increased flexibility, durability and easy maintenance, Kimball Office is unveiling significant enhancements to its Beo, Collage and Event seating solutions. The new options were designed with research collected from healthcare facilities throughout the country, and will be on display starting the week of June 11, in the Kimball Office showroom, located at 325 N. Wells St., Chicago.

"As Kimball Office increases its portfolio for healthcare facilities, it is important for us to introduce solutions sought out by designers and facility managers within these industries. Our goal is to provide the end user and the client with solutions that meet and exceed their expectations, including the ability to transition easily in and out of the seat and retain a safe, clean, quiet and healthy environment", said Max Holland, director of vertical markets. "Although the enhancements are in response to requests from specific market segments, many of the new features are also relevant to everyday workplace settings."

Beo - Kimball Office's popular side, guest and lounge seating line, Beo, is expanding its offering with five new enhancements. The Beo lounge will be available with a clean-out feature to help organizations easily wipe surfaces and remove debris, and an extra three inches can be added to the chair#s width in order to accommodate individuals up to 350 pounds. Tablet surfaces will be available in wood or laminate, and a specialized grommet can be installed in one or both arms to allow users to easily transfer and lock the tablet surface into either arm for increased functionality. To promote a quiet and peaceful recovery and work environment, Beo also offers an optional quiet caster. Beo#s arms, back and seats can be upholstered separately in order to delineate space through color and match the interior design#s aesthetic.

Realizing clients' desire for design options tailored towards broader audiences, Kimball Office has also added a bariatric bench to its Collage and Event seating lines. We#ve listened to our clients and are increasing the number of seating options available to accommodate visitors and guests, added Holland.

Collage - Designed for private offices, public spaces and meeting rooms, Collage offers designers and facility managers a versatile, stylish, wood-framed guest seating option. Beo - Expanding with five enhancements, the Beo lounge will be available with a clean-out feature to help organizations easily wipe surfaces and remove debris. An extra three inches can also be added to the chair's width in order to accommodate individuals up to 350 pounds. Tablet surfaces will be available in wood or laminate, and a specialized grommet can be installed in one or both arms to allow users to easily transfer and lock the tablet surface into either arm for increased functionality. Beo#s arms, back and seats can be upholstered separately in order to delineate space through color and match the design's aesthetic. Beo meets SCS Indoor Advantage Gold and ANSI/BIFMA level 2 certification.

Collage - A new bariatric bench solution, capable of accommodating users up to 500 pounds, increases the line#s versatility, without compromising its design, which is already available with or without arms, as two-person benches and with a slat or upholstered back. Collage is designed for private offices, public spaces and meeting rooms, and offers designers and facility managers a versatile, stylish, wood-framed guest seating option. Collage meets SCS Indoor Advantage Gold and ANSI/BIFMA level 2 certification.

Event - Event is designed for meeting and training rooms and guest seating. A new bariatric bench, suitable for users up to 500 pounds, is available with the line#s standard options such as: mobile or static legs, with or without arms and a variety of designs for the back shape. The bariatric bench helps facilities support a greater range of users and brings increased flexibility to commonly used spaces. Event meets SCS Indoor Advantage Gold and ANSI/BIFMA level 2 certification.

Vision Collection of surface materials - The Vision Collection of surface materials is adding 15 new fabrics tailored to meet the needs of healthcare and education settings. Of the 15 new fabrics, all from Mayer Fabrics, 13 are antimicrobial, seven are bleach-cleanable, seven possess both antimicrobial and bleach-cleanable properties and the four polyurethanes are polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-free. The Vision Collection now consists of 20 antimicrobial and 16 bleach-cleanable fabrics. Kimball Office's surface materials portfolio includes a mix of timeless styles, colors, small, medium and large patterns, solid textures, stripes and a range of new wood finishes and veneers. The new fabrics will be available in mid-July 2012.

Kimball Office Shares Fresh, Sustainable Design Concepts at GSA Expo

Planning a productive and efficient work environment involves the selection of office furniture solutions that support a variety of work modes, including collaboration and mobile workers. During the General Services Administration (GSA) Expo, May 15-17, in San Antonio, Kimball Office will showcase its commitment to developing innovative ideas that transition between all facets of the office, from the C-suite to the reception station and training rooms.

"Kimball Office is a leader in providing creative and relevant design ideas for agencies searching to maximize real estate potential, accommodate a changing work environment, incorporate the latest design trends, meet sustainability guidelines and stay within an assigned budget," said Karl Schrumpf, director of government sales for Kimball Office.

During the show, Kimball Office will display four lines - Priority, Villa, Itsa and Beo.

Priority - Priority offers private office, open plan, reception and training room solutions. Priority benching is offered in six-inch increments, without encroachment, and the undersurface table support enables spans up to eight feet between legs, eliminates redundant leg support and connects back-to-back or with returns for added workspace. Dual frames can accommodate 24-, 30- or 36-inch dual tops and 48- or 60-inch single tops, and back-to-back frames can accommodate privacy screens, shared shelving and returns. The inclusion of height-adjustable tables addresses users# needs for increased ergonomic comfort and workplace versatility. Five options are available - an incremental pin adjust, click, crank handle or electric single or dual stage memory, with three to four settings. Priority is Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) Indoor Advantage Gold and American National Standards Institute/Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer's Association (ANSI/BIFMA) level 3 certified.

Villa - With the ability to create free-form lounge configurations, Villa includes privacy lounges (highbacks), youth units, tables and power/data options. Originally based on the idea of building blocks, the highback option can divide space into separate meeting, semi-private or social spaces, while maintaining the look and feel of an open setting. The highback is available with one- or two-seat units and one-seat corner units. A full range of upholstery and leather choices are available with the option to upholster backs, arms and seats separately to delineate space and accommodate design preferences through color. Villa is SCS Indoor Advantage Gold and ANSI/BIFMA level 2 certified. Tables are certified to level 3.

Itsa - Itsa fulfills the need for a simple, functional and stylish task chair that fits petite users, taller users and everyone in between, while unifying an organization's aesthetic. Two basic styles include the choice of a rounded or square seat, both with height-adjustable arms, choice of synchro-tilt or knee-tilt control, black mid-back mesh and black polyurethane base with 55-millimeter casters. Optional seat slider is available for all models. Five seat color choices are available in as little as five days through Kimball Office#s quick ship program, Kwik Office. Itsa is SCS Indoor Advantage Gold and ANSI/BIFMA level 2 certified.

Beo - Beo products feature slightly flared "wall-saver" legs that contact the wall first, limiting wear to the chair's back and wall's finish. The line's contoured backrest and sweeping arms make it popular for private office guest seating and in public spaces. A tandem option is available with one, two or three seats, and tables or add-on seats can be combined to match any configuration. The tandem seating comes in full- and half-back options. A bariatric version is available with a 36-inch frame that supports up to 500 pounds. To complement the Beo seating, freestanding end and magazine tables are also available. Beo is SCS Indoor Advantage Gold and ANSI/BIFMA level 2 certified.

Updated Design and Added Functionality Enhance Kimball Office Definition Casegoods

Although the past few years in contract office furniture have focused on the open plan and benching, Kimball Office recognizes the need to continue providing professional and contemporary private office solutions. The Definition casegoods line, a staple within the company's portfolio, is evolving to offer private office users increased functionality that balances the need for meeting and individual work space, as well as different organizational needs desired by a multi-generational workforce. Enhancements to Definition will be on display the week of June 11, in the Kimball Office showroom, located at 325 N. Wells St., Chicago.

"For years, Definition has provided organizations with a reliable casegoods solution. Today, the line includes a new look and options that support different design preferences and increased use of technology," said Jan Dodd, director of product development for Kimball Office. "The market for private office casegoods is still healthy, and Definition will continue receiving updates in order to meet the changing needs of this market."

Many of Definition's new progressive and contemporary enhancements complement the line's existing, classic style. A new angled extension top creates a cockpit and can host up to three guests for impromptu meetings; additional extension tops, legs and panels are available to build flexible workwalls. Definition's enhancements also support wired technology with new grommets that sit flush to the surface, and hinged modesty panels to help manage and hide cabling. Other new enhancements include partial-height modesty panels and the choice between a classic U-leg, open-frame leg, cylinder base and veneer panels for extensions. Definition's finished backs allow the line to stand alone or integrate with systems products such as Kimball Office#s Traxx and Tiles wall system, and Cetra and Xsite panel systems.

Definition is available with finishes from Kimball Office's new Vision Collection of natural and premium veneers. The natural finishes support Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) wood options and include Kimball Office's proprietary UV-finish, Pura.

Definition meets Scientific Certification Standards (SCS) Indoor Advantag Gold and American National Standards Institute/Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer#s Association (ANSI/BIFMA) level 2 and 3 certifications. The products could contribute towards Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) credits and support an organization#s sustainability practices. Definition#s enhancements will be available in fall 2012.

New Kimball Office Scenario Table Tops Quickly Fulfill Changing Workspace Demands

The need for mobile and flexible workspace solutions is increasing as today's work environments cater toward the needs of mobile workers, teaming and collaboration. To address these demands, Kimball Office is adding 120-degree corner tops and 1-3/16-inch thick tops to its line of Scenario tables. Facility managers, designers and dealers can begin placing order for these new additions today.

"Today's office settings require organizations to use spaces for multiple purposes, which makes the need for mobile, multi-functional and easy-to-maintain furnishings essential," said Jan Dodd, director of product development for Kimball Office. "The new 120-degree Scenario tables can quickly and simply transform any space to offer collaboration or privacy that mimics a traditional benching solution. This latest addition to our line can quickly accommodate any space to meet the users needs, whether those are for studying, training, socialization or teaming."

The 120-degree tables create effective teaming, studying and training areas while offering individual work zones. The Scenario line of tables now includes 1-3/16-inch thick tops with the options of a fixed, mobile or nesting base, an optional modesty panel and power/data capabilities.
