Environmentally Friendly Pura UV Finish
Pura™ is the Kimball Office proprietary, ultraviolet (UV) wood finish system that meets or exceeds strict indoor air quality requirements which create healthier
workplaces and can contribute towards earning a LEED® Green Building Rating.
It has virtually no volatile organic compounds (VOCs)Pura is also more energy efficient thanconventional finishing.
Pura is currently available on most Kimball Office wood products in a semi-open pore 50 degree sheen finish (70 degree for traditional products).

Pura delivers the exceptional depth, clarity, beauty and durability Kimball Office is known for. Additionally:
- Superior chemical resistance and is resistant to vinyl materials, common cleaners, and solvents.
- Excellent resistance to normal scuffing and scratches.
- Thermosetting so that it will not haze with hot liquids or dishes (the “hot pizza” test).
- Cures quickly with UV light to a completely inert finish for excellent resistance to imprint.
- Achieves indoor air quality standards set by LEED and BIFMA Furniture Emission Standards.
- Pura is a Class C for UL 723 Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials.
What is a UV Finish? UV finish is the term that is commonly used to describe a family of coatings that are cured using ultraviolet energy.
Pura is a combination of UV technologies which offers distinct application, aesthetic, and performance advantages.
Curing takes place as the photo-initiator absorbs UV light starting a chemical reaction resulting in a highly cross-linked polymer.
This cross-link density provides the exceptional physical properties which combined with speed of cure,
energy efficiency and reduction of air emissions gives Pura UV distinct advantages.
Pura improves indoor air quality since it is formaldehyde free and there is virtually no off gassing of VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) from the UV coating and process.
Pura represents the ultimate environmentally responsible finish in both end use and production through the reduction in air pollution and greenhouse
gases from the manufacturing process.
Pura has superior chemical resistance; for example, plasticizer migration (imprint) does not occur with exposure to vinyl; there is no softening of the finish.
Improvement is significant such that office supplies and accessories do not have to be avoided as with other common finishes.
Superior chemical resistance also means better performance for exposure to solvents, cleaning agents, and staining materials.
There is no worry regarding the use of various cleaners to take care of spills or accidents. Even permanent marker ink can be removed with finger nail polish remover.
This is just an example where the chemical resistance is improved to a multitude of different agents which may come into contact with the finish.
Pura is thermosetting meaning that it will not break down with heat in end use applications where there may be accidental exposure to hot dishes,
beverage cups, or items such as hot pizza boxes. There is no hazing from water or hot articles.
Similarly this thermosetting property prevents imprinting of package marks from storage in hot warehouses or trailers.
Scratch resistance of the Pura finish is improved particularly to the light scuffing type scratch which may occur in normal use.
The resistance to light scuffs is built into the coating so that polishes or waxes are not required to improve this performance.
Although Pura is significantly better for this type of scratch, one should not assume that the finish is impervious to articles such as binder clips,
staples, jewelry and objects with sharp points.
Pura finish is Underwriters Laboratories listed Class C for UL 723 Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials (Also ASTM E84 and NFPA 255 Class C).
